Plovdiv,
also known as the City of Seven Hills, is the second largest city in
Bulgaria and is located on the banks of the Maritsa River.
The city is divided into two parts - the historic Old Town (Stariya
grad), which occupies the three eastern hills, and the lower town
spread in the plain below. The modern town offers entertainment and
vigorous sights but the Old Town carries the atmosphere and the culture
of the city.
The
Old Plovdiv nowadays is an original living museum, preserved the
architecture of the National Revival period as well as ruins of an
antique Roman theatre. Opera and drama performances are still staged
here on warm summer nights.
The International Fairground
hosts different international exhibitions and events all year round
There is yet more interesting places to visit in the surroundings of
Plovdiv including the Medieval Assenova Krepost fortress and the
Bachkovo monastery. The mountain resort of Pamporovo is only 85 km away
from the city.
